The Big Picture
The ‘Big Picture’ of our curriculum outlines the principles of teaching and learning at Ashburton Primary School. These principles are separated into three sections:
The Intent: Our vision, design and aspirations for our curriculum
The Implementation: The strategies and steps that we take every day to achieve our curriculum intent
The Impact: To evaluate and evidence standards of teaching and learning
The Big Picture of the Ashburton Primary School Curriculum – INTENT
Achieve our Core Statement – ‘Putting Children and Learning at the heart of everything we do’
Ensuring our vision is firmly embedded across all aspects of school life, especially the curriculum.
Embed our core values
To deliver a ‘knowledge-engaged curriculum’ where skills and vocabulary are developed alongside knowledge and understanding.
To develop learning to learn skills (metacognition) and subject specific skills through a knowledge engaged curriculum.
Reading/writing is promoted across the curriculum. Throughout the day, the children are expected to use skills/knowledge gained in reading/writing across the whole curriculum.

The Development Matters (EYFS)/National Curriculum is used to drive and develop the content of our Ashburton Primary School Curriculum. For each subject, we have planned/sequenced learning carefully in to key components which are broken down into smaller chunks (composites) to ensure there is no cognitive overload for our children. Plus, this will always allow our pupils to revisit previous core components which they will build new learning from. This therefore, will ensure they will gain all the knowledge and skills in all areas of Development Matters (EYFS) and the National Curriculum by the time they leave our school. | Subject Specific vocabulary required to attain and excel. | Children will be expected to use their reading and writing skills across the curriculum. |
