The intent of our PHONICS curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that: All children are INSPIRED to develop their talents and love of reading and writing for communication, pleasure and for demonstrating and embedding learning across the curriculum and beyond. Children BELIEVE in themselves and their abilities; At Ashburton primary School we believe 100% of children can, should and will learn the necessary phonics as a stepping-stone to fluent reading and writing. Children DISCOVER and master the patterns and puzzles of the English language spelling system. Children ACHIEVE their full potential in PHONICS by learning to read and write all the ways to spell the 44 English phonemes. Children BELONG to a caring community, which supports them to learn and enjoy Phonics. Our aim is for 100% of our pupils to pass the National Phonics Screening test at least by the end of Year TWO, preferably by the end of Year One. We believe Phonics is a necessary stepping-stone in the overall journey to become a confident reader and writer. |
